Hopson Continues to shine at LeBron James Skills Academy
| Jerry's Mailbag | ||||
| How high for Hopson? Jerry, I was wondering if you could comment more on Scotty Hopson's performance at the LeBron James Skills Academy and how you think he will project as a college player. Also, everything that I have read lately has Scotty as at least a top-10 caliber prospect. But after a jump back to 50 and now still only No. 20, what will it take for him to climb back into his initial 10 position. -- Seth from Vicksburg ;
Offensively, he is nearly unguardable as a scorer. He has a great jump shot and can slash to the basket with explosiveness and finesse. His high-rising floater off the dribble is a thing of beauty, and it's a surprise when it doesn't go in. Where Hopson needs to improve is in his defensive play and his work on the boards. He needs to take the motor he plays with when the ball is in his hands and apply it to other areas of his game. He has a chance to be a very special player in college, and projects as a legitimate NBA shooting guard prospect.

Scotty Hopson, SG, Hopkinsville (Ky.) University Heights This bouncy athlete isn't too far behind DeRozan as a shooting-guard prospect. Also blessed with NBA size and athleticism, Hopson has a feathery touch on his jumper. If he goes right it's almost a guaranteed bucket with his patented floater. He isn't too shabby going left, either. His intensity as a defender and rebounder does need improving, but he possesses the raw talent to develop into one of the best scoring wings in the country. |

Scotty Hopson, SF – The Mississippi commit is getting more consistent. After stringing together great performances at the USA Festival a few weeks ago, he turned around and did it again at the LeBron James US Skills Academy. A great athlete, Hopson is attacking the basket and has shown he’s capable of finishing with either hand around the rim. Although his jumper is a bit unorthodox, more often than not it finds the bottom of the net. The Hopkinsville (Ky.) University Heights product also utilizes a sweet floater around the basket. |

For Team Duke, Lance Stephenson and Scotty Hopson took turns scoring the basketball. Stephenson, who also possesses a man's body as a 2009 prospect, repeatedly bullied his way to the rim and finished with authority. Hopson, who has made a strong case in the last month to move up into the top level of five-star prospects, scored from all three levels with an intriguing mix of athleticism and finesse.
With DeRozan firmly establishing himself as the top shooting guard prospect over the long haul, Scotty Hopson is also making a statement this summer that he is a top flight shooting guard prospect with legitimate NBA potential. In a similar fashion to DeRozan, Hopson is consistently knocking down the deep ball while also putting the ball on the floor and finishing with his patented floater.
Forget that Scotty Hopson was once again sensational during the games. We submit he was the most impressive performer in the wing skill drills. He had a great approach toward the instructions and his execution was strong. Rising star.
Scotty Hopson, SF – Reminiscent of his effort in the Dean Dome a few weeks ago. Hopson was one of the most impressive scorers and skilled wings in the first session. That ease that we love about his game was evident. All the accolades and honors seniors are in line for are his for the taking if he can replicate that effort
